ELINA HAAVIO-MANNILA sosiologist 1933- Professor emerita Elina Haavio-Mannila is one of the most well-known Finnish sociologists both in Finland and internationally. Gender differences and similarities and gender equality are research topics that bind together most of her studies. In the 1960s, she contributed to the introduction of the new Nordic sex role research in Finland. The most well known landmark was the book Suomalainen nainen ja mies (The Finnish Woman and Man, 1968). The book is counted among classic texts in Finnish gender studies, and had a large influence in societal debate at its time. Characteristic of Haavio-Mannila's researcher profile have been longitudinal studies, international comparisons, and intensive international research cooperation. She has also been a pioneer in research of everyday life phenomena, from afternoon dancing to work place romances. Haavio-Mannila was not only the first woman to defend a doctoral thesis in Sociology in Finland, and the first woman to obtain a doctoral degree in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki (1958). She was also the first female professor of the faculty (1992) and first woman ever to chair the Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters (1995). Before her appointment to full professor, she had in fact been an acting professor for nearly two decades. Elina Haavio-Mannila had been active societally, and participated in committee work and social debate around topics of her studies.
