ELSA ENÄJÄRVI-HAAVIO
scholar of many callings
1901-1951

Elsa Enäjärvi-Haavio's generation, following the pioneering female academics, was allowed to pursue university studies without any special permission. She was the first woman folklorist in Finland to complete a doctoral degree in 1932. Enäjärvi studied games, folk poetry and songs, as well as annual festivals, such as Christmas and Shrovetide, and the related beliefs and customs.

In addition to her academic activities, Elsä Enäjärvi-Haavio was a cultural critic and social opinion leader, who spoke and wrote about the status of women in the academic world. She was often featured in interviews where she argued for the opportunity of combining "the feminine calling" and scholarly work. To prove the point, the interviews were accompanied by photographs of her family: five children and her husband, Professor Martti Haavio, a folklorist as well.
