- Research project is "Cultural Change and Tensions of Home – A Qualitative Study on Daily Life of Families"
My research project focuses on analysing home, family life and the dynamics of family members’ gatherings at home from the perspective of activity. In my study, the concept of activity is theoretically based on the cultural-historical activity theory. Analysing home as activity opens home as socially and materially mediated phenomenon. The theory offers tools for analysing actions socially and materially intertwined. After analysing families with young children in previous study, I shall, now, continue evolving methods for analysing simultaneous actions of family members in different family stages. Following simultaneous actions reveals tensions in the process of the activity of constructing home. I shall continue analysing tensions in order to see more thoroughly, if they are just individual features or reveal more common cultural change processes in the Finnish daily life at home. Understanding tensions as indicators of the contradictions in cultural change processes help to understand the nature of contemporary daily life in Finland. The contemporary home consists of different layers and ideas both cultural and personal. Understanding cultural contradictions and layers of home it helps to understand the pressures of daily life that Finnish families face. Such information helps to improve the conditions of daily life, for instance, on governmental and societal level.
