Dear visitor,

welcome to the home page of Visa Heinonen (Professor in Consumer Economics)!

Fields of Interest:

My most important fields of interest are consumer research, the long-run transition of consumer society, history of advertising, economic and consumer policy, youngsters as consumers and the history of economic thought.

I’ve been conducting research on the main field of my interest that is the transition of consumer society since the 1990s. In my dissertation (Heinonen 1998) I studied the roots of Finnish consumer policy in the level of womens’ associations and co-operative trade organizations. Our most important co-operation (with the social science history department in the faculty of social sciences, University of Helsinki) is the Transformation of Consumer Society Graduate School (http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/blogs/kulutus/tutkijakoulu/english/index.htm) and the seminar related to it (http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/blogs/kulutus/information.htm).

Some years ago I wrote a book (together with Hannu Konttinen: Heinonen & Konttinen 2001, in Finnish) on the history of Finnish advertising and have published articles dealing with the same theme. Besides, our research projects have focused on young consumers (together with Dr. Minna Autio). At the moment we are conducting research on Finnish consumer policy and focusing on consumer policy programmes.

One field of my interests has been the history of economic thought. In year 2000 we published a history of Finnish economic thought during the 19th century written together with Dr. Jukka Pekkarinen, Dr. Antti Kuusterä and Dr. Sakari Heikkinen (Heikkinen, Heinonen, Kuusterä & Pekkarinen 2000). Besides, I have published several articles on this subject.

The first Finnish text book in consumer economics was published in 2005 (Heinonen & al. 2005).

Our most important institutional collaborators are the Finnish Association of Consumer Research (http://www.kulutustutkimus.net/) and the National Consumer Research Centre.
