RESEARCHERS

Esa Väliverronen, project leader (professor, University of Helsinki, Dept. of Communication, esa.valiverronen@helsinki.fi, http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/staff/valiverr/) has studied the communication of science, technology and environmental issues in the media. His research interests also include theories of the public sphere, science and technology studies, discourse analysis and metaphors. His previous projects are:

Iina Hellsten (Dr.Soc.Sc.) defended her dissertation The Politics of Metaphor, Biotechnology and Biodiversity in the Media in January 2002 at University of Tampere, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. She works currently at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research continuing her research on metaphors and biotechnology (hellsten@pscw.uva.nl) Her previous projects are:

  • The EU-question the Citizen and the Media, the Academy of Finland (1993-1995). Metaphor analysis of the debate on Finland's EU membership in Helsingin Sanomat and on national television.
  • Images of Women in the Media. EU Commission, (1997). Report on Nordic research into images of women in the media.
  • Science in Biodiversity Politics, the Academy of Finland (1997-1999). Metaphors of nature and biodiversity in journalism (New York Times/US and Guardian/UK, Aamulehti and Helsingin Sanomat/FIN), coverage of Dolly, the cloned sheep in 1997 (Times and Nature), advertisements by the life sciences companies Hoechst and Novartis in 1997-98 (Newsweek and Der Spiegel). Riitta Kärki (Lic.Soc.Sc., University of Tampere, Department of Information Studies, lirika@uta.fi) is researching her doctoral dissertation on "The production of knowledge and scholarly communication within medical genetics". The aim is to explore medical research practice in a social, institutional and societal context. Scholarly communication is understood broadly as covering everything from personal discussions to the appearance of scientists and representations of medical science in the media. The study is based on interviews with Finnish medical scientists. Her previous projects are:

  • The characteristics of information studies and the sociology of science and the study of scholarly communication as their common domain, University of Tampere (1991-1994).
  • Reflections on medical science in the public sphere, the Cultural Foundation of Finland (1996-1997). Link to PUBLICATIONS.

Michaela Laurén (M.Soc.Sc., University of Helsinki, Department of Sociology, miksu@worldpacific.com.au) started her post-graduate studies in 1999. Her Master's thesis "Human heredity and genes in newspapers" was completed in autumn 1998 and she will continue her studies on different aspects of public understanding of human genetics and heredity. She has worked previously in a project on:
