In Pictures: On the trail of the Death of the Empress Elisabeth

On 30 December 2003, I went to Geneva for the day. I was determined to recount the footsteps of the Empress on that fateful day of 10 Sept 1898 when she was assassinated by the Italain anarchist Luccheni as she was about to board a boat on the lake. I was going to search for the plaque that marks the spot of the assasination, then pay homage to the statue that stands a few metres away from it (also opposite the Hotel Beau-Rivage where she spent her last night and died from her wounds). It turned out to be one of the most exciting adventures ever; left me shaking! To read the whole account of my adventure, click here

The plaque marking the spot where Sissi was killed 10 September 1898

The view that the Empress saw. She fainted, and died about a half an hour later from internal bleeding without ever regaining conciousness.

The Hotel Beau-Rivage where Sissi spent her last night. She was carried back to her suite after fainting, and died there. I managed to get a peek of the suite and a display case of random possessions! My camera, most unfortunately, had run out of space by then.

This and the following pictures are of the statue of Sissi directly opposite Beau-Rivage, by the lake.
