Welcome to the
EUROPEAN LIFE STORY ARCHIVE
of the Kärsämäki Life Story Academy
After already a long period of development in the collection
and use of written autobiographies in many European
countries, it is now time to enter the stage of Europe-wide
collections.
In Kärsämäki, North Finland, a Life
Story Academy was
founded in 1999. This Academy has as one its purposes to
develop contacts between European authors of life stories, by
means of summer meetings, international courses AND by
establishing a virtual life story archive.
In the article, an outline of this archive project is presented,
with links, actual stories and invitation to send in new stories in
all European languages.
The idea is that anybody who registers and accepts to the
conditions can use the archives (with one possible condition
for registration being provision of a life story to the archive) and
send
in material. There will be open forums, advisory boards etc. for the
benefit of the authors. The archives will be fully decentralized
and
self-regulating so that the basic means of giving access to a story
would
be via one's own home page, as well as via links to the existing national
archives. All kinds of life story materials will be accepted, from
audiovisual to traditional texts (even photographed handwritten
materials).
