Y550. Practical Training

Y550. Practical Training

Code: 791590 Credits: 5

Objectives

Practical training is an optional part of studies. The goal is to get acquainted with work practices in public administration, organisations or companies.

Prerequisites

Bachelor's degree.

Mode of assessment

At least two months of uninterrupted training in a workplace approved by the Departmental amanuensis. A written report of three pages and a copy of a letter of reference need to be submitted to the amanuensis.

Degree Students of Political Science at Helsinki University are eligible for applying Internship Grants. From 2009 onwards, the grants are allocated by the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Faculty selects more than 100 students each year for University-supported traineeship.

In practice, a University-supported traineeship means financial support for two (2) months of practical training for which the trainee’s employer invoices the University. The trainee’s employer may be a private business (Finnish or foreign), an organisation, a municipality or the State. The application period for traineeship support takes place once a year.

As of 2010, all traineeship applications must be submitted to the Faculty, which will select the trainees. The students receiving traineeship support will agree on the traineeship placements with the traineeship contact person of their discipline. Applications can be submitted from 1 December to 20 December 2009 using an electronic form accessible on the Faculty website from the beginning of the application period.

Application criteria

1. Applicants must have completed their Bachelor’s degree by the end of the application period. If a student is pursuing Master’s studies but has not yet completed a Bachelor’s degree, he or she may be considered eligible to apply if there are valid reasons. 2. Applicants cannot have previously completed a University-supported traineeship (including an Erasmus traineeship) or other practical training which the Faculty of Social Sciences has entered in the Student Register as completed. 3. Applicants must be registered as attending students in the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Helsinki and cannot have completed a Bachelor’s degree in the Swedish School of Social Science.

Selection procedure The Faculty will select the supported trainees by drawing lots between the applicants who meet the application criteria. The Faculty will allocate the available months of traineeship support to each discipline in relation to the number of applicants meeting the criteria. The recipients of traineeship support and the applicants placed on the reserve list will be informed of the Faculty’s selection decision by mid-January 2010.

Traineeship agreement

Recipients of traineeship support in 2010 must commit to concluding a traineeship agreement between the employer and the department as well as to concluding a work contract with the employer by 30 April 2010 or they will lose the traineeship support, which will then be reallocated to an applicant on the reserve list. If a recipient of traineeship support has not concluded a traineeship agreement by the above deadline but intends to do so later in the year, he or she must submit a reasoned written report to the discipline’s traineeship contact person about when and where he or she will complete the traineeship.

Selection from the reserve list

Applicants placed on the reserve list will be notified by mid-May 2010 if they have received traineeship support due to a cancellation. Those selected from the reserve list to receive traineeship support must conclude a traineeship agreement or submit a written plan concerning the use of the traineeship support to the discipline’s traineeship contact person by 30 September 2010 (see “Traineeship agreement”).

Finding a traineeship placement and concluding a traineeship agreement

Students themselves must find their traineeship placements, which must then be approved by the discipline’s traineeship contact person. The students must also agree on the nature of their employment relationship with the employer: in the public sector, students can be employed in either a public-service employment relationship or a contractual employment relationship. In the private sector, a work contract must always be concluded. Students selected for the traineeship support system will be separately informed of the conclusion of a traineeship invoicing agreement between the employer and the University.

Timing

Practical training must be done before the completion of all of the Master's degree studies in Political Science, including the Master's thesis (thesis submitted for assessment).

Compulsory subprogramme-specific study unit M410. Theory and Methodology of Research on World Politics (8 credits) and one of the three fields of specialisation (16 credits): Foreign Policy and Diplomacy, Peace and Conflict Research or Global Political Economy and Global Governance.

Mode of assessment

Each field of specialisation in the World Politics subprogramme is based on a lecture series arranged in the form of a workshop, during which students read and analyse some of the main articles related to the field and take an oral examination on five articles that the students select from the latest volume of a journal dealing with the field of specialisation. The requirements also include a Faculty examination on four books. Students are given a list of 6–8 important research topics from which they can select the ones most appropriate for their own orientation. One of the books can also be selected outside the given literature list if agreed with the teacher responsible for the study unit.

  • Fri 10.12. 12-14 (U37, sh 2) Professor of Global Political Economy Philip G. Cerny

Mode of assessment

The workshop consists of guest lectures and seminar sessions where work-in-progress papers are presented and commentaries are received from invited lecturers. First-year students participate in lectures, discussions and write a study reports accordingly (3 ECTS). Second-year students present the research plan of their master’s thesis or part of the thesis itself and receive feedback (2 ECTS).

Each of the lecturers will provide background material for his/her lecture(s): usually one or two research articles (s)he has written related to the particular theme. The students are to read the material in advance and – mainly on the basis of the material – prepare questions, or a question, to the lecturer. Within a week after the lectures, students are to hand in a study report (one per lecturer) where they:

  • specify the question(s) (what was my question to the lecturer?)
  • justify the question (why was this a good question for this lecturer?)
  • provide a (possible) answer (either based on the actual answer by the lecturer, on reading further into the topic)

The length of each report should be 3-5 pages. Formulating a good question and explicating possible answers is the main objective of the exercise. The questions can also serve as a starting point of the discussions with the lecturer. If the questions are actually treated together, the “results” may be evaluated in the report (did the lecturer’s answer satisfy the student?, did the answer amount to what (s)he expected?, can the particular question be “answered”?, why does (or does not) the particular framework provide an answer / this particular kind of answer to the question? etc.). However, if the event does not allow for (all) questions to be treated – there is not enough time, interesting discussions develop in different directions – the questions prepared beforehand and discussed (in writing) afterwards may function as practice in formulating and delimiting research problems suited to specific themes and approaches.

The study reports, four (five) altogether, should be handed in to Riikka Kuusisto (white mail box outside the office of Political Science).

Timing

Research workshop extends over the I and II periods.

Target group/Course level

MDP students in Democracy and Global Transformations. Obligatory course.

Master's Thesis Seminar

Credits: 7

Content

The thesis planning that starts in the Praktikum seminar continues in Democracy and Global Transformations Master’s seminar where the research problem and frame are defined and adjusted, the knowledge of relevant literature deepened and the preliminary results of the thesis presented. The goal of the seminars is to improve students’ readiness to fulfill the requirements related to completion of their Master’s thesis. Students understand what is expected from a feasible and reasonable research plan. They master the research tradition related to the topic, are able to form a research problem and to set up relevant research questions, and can select adequate research data and methods. Students know how to utilize source materials in an appropriate manner. The aim is to consolidate the readiness for academic writing and ability to critically assess scientific research and its results. Students are encouraged to engage in open and supportive discussions about different ways of doing research.

Mode of assessment

Three papers related to the thesis are written during the seminars. The first 1-2 pages long draft outline which is written during the Praktikum is presented in very beginning of Democracy and Global Transformations seminar. Next, a research plan (5-10 pages) is prepared and discussed. Writing the research plan is mandatory in order to continue in the seminar. The last paper includes the research questions, a theoretical framework and a timetable for finishing the thesis. This last paper (20-30 pages) can also include a sample from the analysis part of the thesis and may be incorporated into the final version of the thesis.

Evaluation

During the last session, students will have an opportunity to give feedback on the course to the lecturer and to fill in an anonymous evaluation form. During the course feedback can be given anonymously.

When giving feedback, please evaluate the contribution of the teacher, your own contribution, the contributions of other students and the possible contribution of the Department office to the success of the course.
