Topics in the course will include: Class session 1—International development: selected issues and concepts

Class session 2—Women and gender in international development:

  • developments and concepts related to gender in international development thinking
  • women defining needs and interests

Class session 3—Women´s roles in production, reproduction and in community work (with ases from Africa and Asia)

  • views on women’s roles from the literature
  • gender analysis methods and means
  • use of role dimensions and usefulness for understanding gender issues

Class session 4—Participatory methods and work with women in developing countries: How do women view themselves and what do they want?

  • priorities for women internationally and locally
  • diversities and locations shaping women’s lives and opportunities
  • researching in partnership with women (e.g., case examples illustrating the use of participatory methods, photovoice, etc.)

Course work and forms of study

This course will include class instruction for two and a half hours over four days. There will be four articles and other readings assigned for students. There will also be a final essay to be completed at the end of the course.

For each class, a reading will be assigned that students are expected to discuss in class and draw from later in their essay. These will be distributed to students in advance. Essays should be sent by email attachment to the instructor within 10 days of the last class. The instructor will grade the paper and send the mark back to you and the course coordinator by email.

The short class paper (five pages) will address the following questions:

1. What is your view, based on course reading, experience and knowledge of the ways in which women´s social situation could be improved at the local level?

2. If you were able to plan and implement a project for women in a local area in a developing country to address one of the issues, what would it be about and how would you develop the plan?

3. How would the project you have developed affect women`s practical needs and/or strategic interests? How would it influence women’s productive, reproductive and/or community roles?

Course description:

The aim is to gain basic knowledge of empirical, both quantitative and qualitative social research. The students will get a capability to conduct minor research projects and critically analyse social research.

Mode of assessment:

A lecture course and literature to be announced on the lecture course. If there is no lecture-course in English during the study year, the students take the faculty examination and write an essay (the subject to be agreed with the examiner).

Prerequisite:

Introduction to statistics or another equivalent course. Students have to register for the course in WebOodi before the date announced on the study guide.

Internet course. The course introduces the students to social work with families and children and its methods. In the field of child welfare, we will concentrate on preventive work, family support and so called open care. We will also discuss recent results of critical family research and sociological childhood research on social work with families and children. The course concentrates on the Finnish service system, concepts and research. The course is directed to social work students and exchange students. Language of the course will be English.

: During this course the following questions, for example, are discussed: What do practice-based knowledge production and practice research mean in social work? How do social workers use knowledge in practice? How do citizens and social work users participate in knowledge production? What kind of critical viewpoints relate to these questions? This course is based on the recorded material of the International Symposium (Reconstructing social work - critical issues for knowledge in practice) held in Helsinki in February 2005. The well-known speakers represent different countries and diverse viewpoints. Language of the course is English.

Content

The course introduces the students to social work with families and children concentrating on preventive work, family support and so called open care. Course description:

The aim is to familiarise the student with the most common statistical methods of social research, especially the multivariate analysis. The course provides the student with a capability to choose the appropriate method for solving problems of analyses, to review critically the method's applications and, through further studies, to apply these methods independently.

Mode of assessment:

Lecture course, exercises and final examination. Course exercises require knowledge and practice of some the statistical computer programmes (e.g. SAS, SPSS; BMDP, Survo). Course description:

The aim is to deepen the student’s analytical understanding of the ongoing societal changes in contemporary Nordic welfare states by using comparative approach. The course focuses in particular on the historical changes of social and control policies and the connections these changes and professional as well as voluntary social work has had with them at various times.

Accomplishment:

The course is organised as co-operative learning for Finnish speakers. Compensations

Content

Topics in the course will include: Class session 1—International development: selected issues and concepts

Class session 2—Women and gender in international development:

  • developments and concepts related to gender in international development thinking
  • women defining needs and interests

Class session 3—Women´s roles in production, reproduction and in community work (with ases from Africa and Asia)

  • views on women’s roles from the literature
  • gender analysis methods and means
  • use of role dimensions and usefulness for understanding gender issues

Class session 4—Participatory methods and work with women in developing countries: How do women view themselves and what do they want?

  • priorities for women internationally and locally
  • diversities and locations shaping women’s lives and opportunities
  • researching in partnership with women (e.g., case examples illustrating the use of participatory methods, photovoice, etc.)

Course work and forms of study

This course will include class instruction for two and a half hours over four days. There will be four articles and other readings assigned for students. There will also be a final essay to be completed at the end of the course.

For each class, a reading will be assigned that students are expected to discuss in class and draw from later in their essay. These will be distributed to students in advance. Essays should be sent by email attachment to the instructor within 10 days of the last class. The instructor will grade the paper and send the mark back to you and the course coordinator by email.

The short class paper (five pages) will address the following questions:

1. What is your view, based on course reading, experience and knowledge of the ways in which women´s social situation could be improved at the local level?

2. If you were able to plan and implement a project for women in a local area in a developing country to address one of the issues, what would it be about and how would you develop the plan?

3. How would the project you have developed affect women`s practical needs and/or strategic interests? How would it influence women’s productive, reproductive and/or community roles?
