Courses on this section provide students with knowledge of the basic theories and epistemological questions as well as with the principles of quantitative and qualitative methods within social sciences. After taking these courses, students can expect to be acquaint with the main discourses of culture and social sciences and their influence on methodology. They are capable to apply one quantitative and one qualitative method, and to read in a critical and informed way research that applies other methods.
The course provides students with the knowledge of the basic theories and epistemological questions of development studies. After taking the course, students can expect to understand the main discourses of culture- and social sciences and their influence on methodology. The course explores realist and constructivist views in social sciences through classics (Marx, Weber, Durkheim) and more recent theorists (Parsons, Foucault, Giddens, Bourdieu, Luhmann, Latour), and reflects the methodological consequences of different theoretical approches.

303 Research methodologyScope cr 10
The unit provides theoretical and practical knowledge on methodology associated with social sciences and teaches how to use these methods. The students are equipped with methodological skills that are relevant for writing Master’s dissertation.
Students take courses (2 x 5 cr) from the methodology basket of the Faculty of Social Sciences or from the methodology courses offered by the Institute of Development Studies. Alternatively, literature examinations can be agreed with the teacher.
304 Practical TrainingScope cr 5
The practical training familiarises students with working practices in the field of development. The practical training may be taken in public administration, a non-governmental organisation, private enterprises or a research project of the Institute of Development Studies. Tutoring will engage students with the ongoing research- and education projects within the Institute of Development Studies. Tutors work as course assistants or tutors at the courses of the institute, or as assistants in the institute’s research projects. The student can also take an optional course in development studies (205 or 305).
The student submits a copy of a letter of reference and a report of three pages to the amanuensis. The report discusses 1) job description 2)internships connection to development studies 3) evaluation of the internship experience.

The study unit provides students with an opportunity to focus on a certain development theme of her interest. The courses that are provided equip students with theoretical and analytical tools that are needed while writing Master’s dissertation. All students take two optional courses (10 cr each).

Development Studies as a Minor subject
Basic Studies (Credits: 25, Credit Units: 15): Study units 101, 102, 103 and 105 plus optional studies from the unit 205 (5 credits each).
Intermediate Studies (35 credits): Study units 201, 202 (5 credits each)and 203 (10 credits) plus optional studies from the unit 205 (15 credits).
Post-graduate Studies1. Advanced studies in Development Studies. If the student does not have Development Studies as the major subject in the Master’s degree, he/she has to complete supplementary requirements. The scope and extent of such studies will be decided case by case, taking into consideration the applicant’s entire graduate and postgraduate education as well as publications. The need for supplementary studies will be decided upon the admission to postgraduate studies, but the exact scope and contents will be agreed only after the admission. As a rule the extent of supplementary studies is not more than 25 credits. These requirements are completed as agreed with the Professor before the beginning of the postgraduate programme (60 credits).
Post-graduate Studies can be divided into two degrees: Licentiate of Social Sciences and Doctor of Social Sciences. Licentiate of Social Sciences is a lower, optional post-graduate degree, mainly composed of independent research. For the Doctor’s degree (Doctor of Social Sciences) the candidate must write a dissertation. After receiving permission from the Faculty to publish the thesis, the candidate must defend the dissertation in a public examination which is organized as a debate between the candidate and an opponent or occasionally two opponents.

Luento-osio suoritetaan osallistumalla luennoille ja laatimalla niistä luentopäiväkirja, joka toimitetaan Kehitysmaatutkimuksen laitoksen toimistoon tai ilmoitustaulun alla olevaan lokeroon.
Kurssin suorittaminen edellyttää aktiivista läsnäoloa luennoilla ja luentopäiväkirjan kirjoittamista vähintään 11 luennosta.

Luennoilla käsitellään kehitysmaiden ympäristökysymyksiä fyysis-biologisina, sosio-kulttuurisina ja taloudellis-poliittisina prosesseina yhteiskunnallisille tasoille linkittyvinä ilmiöinä. Luentosarjassa painopiste on ympäristönhallinnassa ja sen vaikutuksissa kestävään kehityksen esikolonialistisesta ajasta nykypäivään.

Kurssin tavoitteena on tutustua kansalaisjärjestöjen kehitysyhteistyötä koskevaan tutkimuskeskusteluun sekä sen keskeisiin teemoihin. Kurssilla käsitellään kansalaisyhteiskunnan käsitteen ja kansalaisjärjestöjen suhdetta, kansalaisjärjestöjen rooleja kehitysyhteistyössä, etelän ja pohjoisen kansalaisjärjestöjen välistä kumppanuutta sekä pohditaan suomalaisten kansalaisjärjestöjen toimintaa kehitysmaissa.
Opintojakso koostuu luennoista, tentittävästä artikkelipaketista sekä kurssin lopuksi palautettavasta esseestä, jossa käytetään lähteenä luentoja ja opettajan osoittamaa materiaalia. Kurssin kokonaislaajuus on 5 op.

Kurssi perehdyttää opiskelijat lasten oikeuksien tematiikkaan kehitysmaissa. Kurssin tavoitteena on tuoda esille kehitysmaissa elävien lasten ja nuorten elinolojen moninaisuutta. Tavoitteena on myös edesauttaa analyyttista suhtautumista kehitysmaiden lasten elämänoloihin. Kurssi on osa Avoimen yliopiston ja Helsingin yliopiston laajempaa ’Lasten oikeudet’-opintoja (15op), joka antaa kattavat perustiedot lasten oikeuksista. Tähän osioon voi osallistua myös ilman osallistumista kokonaisuuden muihin osioihin.
Läsnäolo ensimmäisellä luennolla on hyvin tärkeää.

Luennot 28 t + artikkelit + oppimistehtävä
Opetuksen tavoitteena on olla vuorovaikutteista ja keskustelevaa. Luennoilla keskustellaan myös pienryhmissä. Luennoille valmistaudutaan lukemalla materiaalia, jonka linkki löytyy tältä sivulta 2.9. lähtien. Kurssimateriaalin lukeminen kurssin kuluessa on edellytys kurssin suorittamiselle. Opiskelijoiden tulee suunnitella ajankäyttönsä kurssin aikana tämä huomioiden. Poissa voi olla enintään kolmelta luentokerralta.
Kurssin lopputehtävänä on vastata kahteen kysymykseen essee-muodossa. Over the past two decades, globalization has become the buzzword in both academic as well as popular discourse. At the same time, we have witnessed the intensifying significance of world religions, be it Islam or evangelical Christianity, in the international politics. Generally, the term globalization is taken to describe processes that are taking place partly due to the ever-increasing compression of time and space as well as recent rapid advances of information and communication technology. The term globalization has been used as a descriptive term to draw attention to the global capitalist economy, migration and transnationalism referring to the rapidly accelerating circulation of commodities, people, images and media products on the global scale. However, many scholars have sought to situate globalization in the local communities suggesting that the processes of globalization do not necessarily lead to greater cultural homogeneity. Concepts such as glocalization have been introduced to describe those different forms that that the impact of globalization can take in different cultures and societies.
World religions such as Christianity and Islam are, by definition, globalizing projects. For instance, during the past two decades Latin American and African societies have witnessed a phenomenal growth of certain forms of Protestant Christianity. Contemporary Pentecostalism provides a prime example of the paradox between a homogenizing cultural force and a culturally specific localizing project. Similar phenomena have been described in the context of Islam in relation to globalization and transnationalism. The opposition between local particularism and universalism has been a recurrent theme throughout history. Islam as a globalizing force has been shaped in its encounter with local social and cultural conceptions. Furthermore, in the context of globalization and increased mobility, transnational networks have been strengthened.
The aim of this course is to analyze religion as a societal force in the global South in the context of globalization. The course is cross-disciplinary and draws from the on-going research at different Topelia departments. We draw from examples from Latin America and Africa, from Christianity and Islam in discussing globalizing forces, localizing tendencies and transnational networks.

Kurssilla opitaan keräämään kenttätutkimusaineistoa osallistavia menetelmiä käyttäen ja tunnistamaan osallistamisen rajoja. Osallistavista menetelmistä keskitytään RRA, PRA ja toimintatutkimus, Action Research menetelmiin. Intensiivikurssin ryhmätöissä haetaan kokemusperäistä oppimista. Reviewing statistics on Africa’s declining share of world trade, Susan George remarked in 1993 that “one can almost hear the sound of sub-Saharan Africa sliding off the world map.” But in 2008 Africa seems to be back on the map. World market prices for “strategic minerals” are rising, and not only governments and multinationals based in western countries, but increasingly Chinese and other new economic power-players are scrambling to secure their access to Africa’s remaining mineral wealth. Is Africa finding a new place for itself in the world economy, or simply back to its colonial role as provider of raw materials?
This course offers a critical introduction to current research on the historical, economic, social, political, environmental and geographical dimensions of the way mineral extraction in Africa is currently reconfigured by powerful players both out- and inside the continent. We will approach these topics through theoretical literature and case studies of specific minerals, countries, multinationals and transport routes. The emphasis is however not on world markets or international relations. We will try to discover the human faces of those who govern, or are governed by the topographies of extraction and also pay attention to less well-known cases than “Shell in Nigeria” or “China in Sudan”. The daily realities of small-scale miners, smugglers, “human taxis” and other foot-soldiers of extraction will also emerge in ethnographic detail.

The course is meant for students who have a broad idea of how aid and trade work but have not done substantial specialized courses on them before.
The course is to give the students a basic understanding of the present forms and trends in European development policy, with an emphasis on aid and trade policies, and its historical development as well as provide them with some theoretical tools to analyse these.
The course consists of an introductory section, covering the broad outlines of European development policy today; a history section, looking for the colonial and non-colonial origins of European aid, trade and other relevant policies; analysis section, discussing theoretical approaches to European aid, trade and other policies and policy coherence, and a concluding section, asking where European development policy is heading to?

305 The postcolonial state: politics, justice and security in poor countriesMaximum of 20 students will be taken. Priority is given to those majoring in Development Studies.
During the last decade, development policies and practices in the world’s richest nations and many developing countries have become increasingly preoccupied with issues of security. This has involved redefining development and redirecting aid and policy as tools to prevent or resolve violence and conflict. This shift in attention poses new challenges to the social sciences.
The course offers a critical introduction to contemporary debates on state, sovereignty and security in Africa, with an emphasis on contributions from Anthropology, History and Political Science. During the weekend seminar, we will revisit the themes of the course by watching the film Apocalypse Now, followed by group work and discussions.
For 5 credits:
• attendance of minimum 5 out of 6 Monday sessions and the entire week-end seminar (25-26.4.) • presentation of maximum 20 min. (+10-25 min. for discussion) during the course as part of a working group • writing of a lecture diary for the Monday lectures, approximately 2 pages A4 per session, to be submitted by (5.5.).
For 10 credits: • In addition to the above, writing an essay of 5000 words (ca. 12 pages A4) by (16.5.).

In South Asia as in any other part of the world women and men have had different experiences of conflict and peace making. This course deals with the impact of women in conflict and peace. Etienne Balibar has argued that the fissures in the “modern political community” emerge from the “practical and ideological sexism as a structure of interior exclusion of women generalized to the whole society,” which leads to the “universalization of sexual difference.” Thus, modern states that are built on gender difference develop a precarious relation with its women. Women became both subjects of the state as well as its other.
In pluralistic societies such as those found in South Asia “the modern projects of national independence, state building, and economic development have had distinctive gender implications and outcomes.” The nation building projects in South Asia has led to the creation of a homogenised identity of citizenship. State machineries seek to create a “unified” and “national” citizenry that accepts the central role of the existing elite. This is done through privileging majoritarian, male and monolithic cultural values that deny the space to difference, particularly gendered difference. In times of conflict this state sexism has had specific impact on women’s lives and this course discusses how women have negotiated with conflict in the context of South Asia.
