Kurssilla käsitellään Williamsin teosta Filosofia humanistisena tieteenalana. Bernard Williamsin teos on sinänsä kulttuurifilosofinen tapaus: erään johtavan brittiläisen filosofin (1929 - 2003) jälkeenjääneitä pohdiskeluja filosofian tehtävästä, alueesta, rajoista ja tulevaisuudesta, metafysiikasta, etiikasta; mukana myös kaunokirjallisia viittauksia.

Williamsin teosta Philosophy as a Humanistic Discipline ja erityisesti sen nimikkoesseetä käsittelevällä kurssilla on tarkoitus keskustelun menetelmää soveltaen käydä läpi hänen perusajatuksensa. Kurssi on siis luennon ja seminaarin välimuoto. Kyseisen esseen teksti (s. 180–199) jaetaan kurssin alkaessa kaikille osanottajille.

Brittifilosofi Bernard Williamsin (1929–2003) yllä mainittu teos julkaistiin postuumisti vuonna 2006 A. W. Mooren toimittamana ja Princeton University Pressin kustantamana. Teos on kokoelma, jonka nimikkoessee perustuu Williamsin 23. helmikuuta vuonna 2000 pitämään esitelmään sarjassa Annual Royal Institute of Philosophy Lecture. Teksti julkaistiin samana vuonna aikakauslehden Philosophy numerossa 75.

Vastatakseen kysymyksiinsä filosofian on monissa tapauksissa otettava huomioon historia. Ongelmana on filosofian laaja-alaisuus: filosofi on amatööri aivan liian monella alueella. Työnjakoa filosofian piirissä ei tule kuitenkaan hylätä vaan arvioida uudelleen. Filosofinen tieto esiintyy usein muodossa: "tiedän, etten tiedä – –" Eri filosofeilla tämä variaabeli '– –' saa kulloinkin erilaisen tulkinnan. Filosofia muodostaa omaehtoisen tutkimus- ja opetusalan. Se saa ihmiset miettimään, mitä he tekevät; tässä suhteessa sillä on yhteyksiä muihin itseymmärryksen tapoihin (tiede, taide, politiikka, jne.). Filosofia ui vastavirtaan nykyajan kulttuurissa, jota luonnehtii koulutuksen yhä voimakkaampi keskittyminen teknisille ja kaupallisille aloille.

On kiinnostavaa verrata Williamsin näkemyksiä siihen, mitä Eino Kaila sanoi vuonna 1929 ilmestyneessä teoksessaan Nykyinen maailmankäsitys:

Content

This course focuses on Business Ethics beyond ethical issues in business and organizational life. According to Anthony Giddens, Life politics is a politics of life decisions that are conceptualized. The discourse of Business Ethics has conceptualized many decisions that influenced corporate behaviour. Social responsibility and sustainable development have become key terms as the result of those conceptualized decisions. In this light Business Ethics is more than just applied ethics to business practice. Today it is life politics, but not without its historical background of Protestantism. The course attempts to show a relation between Protestant American mind-set and contemporary life politics of business ethics.

CLASSICAL CONFUCIANISM: A PHILOSOPHICAL OVERVIEW

Although there are a multiplicity of moral philosophies operative today – utilitarian, Kantian, virtue-based, pragmatic, religious, etc. – they all employ roughly the same vocabulary for discussing ethical (and political) issues in English: “freedom,” “liberty,” “public,” “private,” “democracy,” “justice,” “rights,” “evil,” “rationality,” “dilemma,” “choice,” and of course “ethics,” and “morality.”

None of these terms have close lexical equivalents in the classical Chinese language in which the early Confucians wrote and compiled the texts that have come down to us, hence it might be claimed, as a number of Western thinkers have done, that the Confucians have nothing to say to us today about issues of pressing moral and political concern.

But as their texts reveal with surety, the early Confucians thought long and hard about desired and undesired patterns of human interactions, about the distribution of material goods, the significance of human life, the importance of history and culture for that significance, and about the ideal human society. Moreover, the early Confucians linked these aesthetic, ethical, social and political concerns to the spiritual, and we shall examine how they endeavored to use ethics as a path to the religious life, sacralizing the secular.

These concerns are by no means merely relics of the past, and consequently the fundamental assumption of this seminar is that early Confucian texts are of relevance and importance today, especially as ethical and political issues must now take on international dimensions, and have strong religious overtones as well.

At the same time, the early Confucians are distant from ourselves in their spatial, temporal, cultural and linguistic contexts, and thus our examination of their writings must begin by focusing on the differences between their presuppositions and assumptions about the world, and our own, before taking up similarities. Their views are by no means “inscrutable,” but they are indeed different from those with which we are familiar, and consequently before we can consider seriously how the Confucians may be “just like us,” we must clearly understand the ways in which they are not.

On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings I will lecture on the themes outlined in the schedule below, with a 5-minute break in between each day. During these lectures I will welcome questions and comments at all times. It will be helpful if the readings are done before the lectures each day, although I will discuss materials at times that are not in the readings. On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons I would like to meet with half of the class from 2:15-3:00 pm, and the other half from 3:15–4:00 pm. These will be discussion sessions, with interactive participation strongly encouraged. Whenever possible, the readings for the day should be done before the class meets.

I look forward to an intellectually exciting and pleasurable week with you.

Course description:

The course will focus on major themes in the Dialectic and Doctrine of Method of second of Kant's three Critiques, the Critique of Practical Reason (1788), e.g. the nature of the Highest Good, the antinomy of pure practical reason, the primacy of practical reason, the doctrine of the postulates and Kant’s theory of applying the results of his critical ethics. In addition, we shall have a look at Kant’s essay on Theory and Practice (Section I), which is in a sense his own commentary on parts of the Critique of Practical Reason in the face of public criticism.

Jatkokoulutus- ja harjoitusseminaari

LAKI JA VALTIO VIISASTEN JA VIISASTELIJAIN SILMIN

jatkuu kevätlukukaudella 2009. Kevään ensimmäinen kokoontuminen on keskiviikkona, tammikuun 14. päivänä klo 16-20 oikeustieteellisen tiedekunnan tiedekuntahuoneessa.

Content

The influence of the Presocratics, particularly of Heracleitus, as well as that of Schopenhauer and Wagner, on the work Nietzsche, is well known and much written about.

The course is based on George J Stack’s text Nietzsche and Emerson: An Elective Affinity (Ohio: Ohio University Press, 1992). In it Stack argues that those ideas and theories regarded by many Nietzsche’s original contribution to Western philosophy can actually be traced back to the ideas and theories of Ralph Waldo Emerson, who Stack regards as “surprisingly radical”. These, according to him, influenced the development of Nietzsche’s central ideas; they entered into the existential dimension of Nietzsche’s thought and into the stream of what has been considered a distinctly European intellectual movement.

The series of twelve lectures/seminars over three weeks, then, is an exploration of the theories and ideas shared by Nietzsche and Emerson, as well as an investigation into how they might differ, contrary to the claims of Stack.

Content

The research of emotions has developed into one of the most important areas of interdisciplinary scholarship in the recent decades. Along with empirical scientists, philosophers have taken a keen interest in this historically neglected topic. This course focuses on the contemporary philosophy of emotion, its main problems and theoretical approaches. The course offers an overview of the development of emotion research in the 20th and the early 21st century, starting from William James’ influential feeling theory of emotions, ranging through the rise of cognitive theories from the 1960's onwards until the recent challenges to cognitivism that have brought fundamental questions about the nature of emotions back to the fore. The focus will be on philosophical theories but important contributions of scientific emotion research will be highlighted as well. These include the debate between Robert Zajonc and Richard Lazarus about the primacy of affect or cognition in emotion, Joe LeDoux’s and Antonio Damasio’s findings about the neurophysiology of emotion, and the research on emotional labor initiated by the sociologist Arlie Hochschild. Among the philosophical themes that will be discussed are the distinction between emotions and other affective states, the question of basic emotions, the primacy of cognition and feeling in emotion, emotions and culture, the rationality of emotions , the nature of emotional affectivity, responsibility for emotions, and the role emotions in ethics. The course suits both advanced undergraduate students and graduate students.

Period III, Wed 14-17 S20A sr 222, 14.1.-25.2., Research Fellow Arto Laitinen.

Content

This course concerns normativity, the “ought” –side of the is/ought – divide. The focus is on the dependencies between normative reasons, ‘oughts’, requirements of rationality and social norms.

The course examines what can be called a “reasons approach”, which holds that the notion of a normative reason, “a consideration standing in favour of an action” is central to normativity. Reasons are considerations that justify, make intelligible or eligible or “right”, call for, or require some response such as an action or belief. In happy cases, reasons also motivate and guide agents accordingly, and we can explain why they do what they do by citing the reasons for which they acted. Very different starting points for analysing normativity might be accepted social norms (as in social constructivism); or proper functioning of (procedural, formal) rationality (either in Kantian or other form).

The coursework will include participating the sessions, reading the assigned texts, presenting one of the texts, and writing a short essay.

The first meeting (14.1) will be an introductory lecture, and there are no readings assigned for that. For the other meetings the participants should read one text at a time. The readings will be available from the lobby of Philosophica library (Siltavuorenpenger 20A).

Here’s some preliminary info about the readings:

21.1

The first reading (“Normativity” by Derek Parfit) concerns the nature of normativity, defending the irreducibility of normativity to natural facts, or to motivational force, and yet defending the idea that normative facts are nonetheless genuine facts. (Parfit).

Derek Parfit (1997, 124) has drawn the distinction between two kinds of facts, “normatively significant” descriptive facts (1: “jumping out of a burning building is the only way to save my life”), and literally “normative” facts (2:“the truth of (1) gives me a reason to jump”). He defends the kind of non–naturalist, objectivist realism according to which the latter claim can be a fact, but one which possesses normative force (to be distinguished from motivational force, although ideally people are motivated accordingly).

Derek Parfit’s paper “normativity” (2006) clarifies the irreducibility of normative facts to anything else, and discusses contrary statements by a number of theorists (Hare, Falk, Nowell–Smith, Williams, Korsgaard, Nagel). You are adviced to read especially the bits which seem most understandable to you, and flip through the other parts – some bits may be hard reading if you haven’t read the texts that Parfit comments on, but the moral of the story should be clear enough.

Further, optional reading: (downloadable from http://users.ox.ac.uk/~ball2568/parfit/bibliography.htm)

28.1 (and possibly 4.2)

Then we will discuss Joseph Raz’s early statement (1975; 2nd rev.ed 1990) of the reasons approach. He makes various points about the nature of reasons, and attempts to cash out the normativity of social and legal norms in terms of reasons, especially the second–order “exclusionary reasons”.

11.2 (and possibly 4.2)

John Broome poses a dual challenge to the reasons approach: on the one hand wide–scope “normative requirements”, such as requirements of rationality, cannot be cashed out in terms of reasons, and on the other hand “oughts” are more central than reasons. But it has come unclear whether the first kind of requirements are genuinely “normative” at all, and it is not clear whether either reasons or oughts are primary.

18.2

Jonathan Dancy’s holism about reasons and his moral particularism will suggest we need a clearer distinction between situation–specific facts and general principles – Dancy in effect argues that principles have no interesting role to play, and that reasons function in very irregular ways from situation to another. Dancy further distinguishes between the normative relation of “being a reason” (“favourer”) and the normative relation of “being a right–making (or ought–making) feature”. He suggests that neither is primary. Further, he distinguishes these from such roles as “enabling” or “intensifying” – the features in these roles affect reasons but are not reasons themselves.

25.2

Judith Jarvis Thomson in her paper “normativity” holds that value and reasons–and–oughts, or “evaluatives” and “directives” are intimately connected, but following Peter Geach, Philippa Foot et al she holds that goodness or value is always kind–dependent. There are various kinds of good x’s: good knifes, and good natural functionings of living beings, but nothing (no state of affairs, say) is simply good as such – there is always implicit reference to its “kind”. And things which are not good in their kind are defective. So the key to Thomson’s view on normativity is that things ought not be defective. John Broome argues that such views as Foot’s or Thomson’s falls short of genuine normativity. Does it? Or could Thomson’s views help to see how Broome’s “requirements or rationality” can be understood as “ought to be” norms?

(French 2005, 241)

Luentosarjassa on kahdeksan osaa. Jokainen osa käsittelee sodan olemusta eri myyttien ja uskomusten kautta. Jokaiseen kertaan liittyy elokuva.

Seminar in four sessions Interdisciplinary Encounters is a seminar that deals with a set of major current developments in the social sciences, namely the intensified crossings of disciplinary boundaries. These take place in two directions. Horizontally, there are interactions between social sciences such as economics, sociology, political science, anthropology, and law. These interactions are often rather contested, such as in the case of ‘economics imperialism’, the increasing use of economics-style rational choice explanations in other social sciences. Vertically, social sciences increasingly seek guidance and insight from cognitive and life sciences, such as experimental psychology, neurobiology and evolutionary theory. Major debates accompany these developments as well.

These developments and debates provide juicy raw materials for philosophical scrutiny, and they also call for analyses from the point of view of social studies of science. Such analyses are likely to be of help in organising interdisciplinary practice and debate in the social and other sciences. They deal with issues of relations between disciplines, theories, and explanations such as: whether, how and on what grounds scientists are advised to pay attention to what happens in neighbouring disciplines; how, by way of what kinds of mechanisms, ideas are transferred across disciplinary boundaries; whether one theory or discipline is powerful enough to provide explanations that unify the phenomena and the fields that study them; or whether there is a case for pluralism and complementary coexistence among the theories.

Such issues and others will be discussed in four sessions, based on representative readings. The seminar, to be continued next year, is connected to the recently launched Academy of Finland project TINT (www.helsinki.fi/filosofia/tint). It thus also serves to explore possibilities of collaboration with participants. Please contact the instructor so as to let him know that you plan to participate.

Debates in queer theory can be seen as general critique of Western concept of subjectivity. Queer theory takes on workshop the issue of the classical concept of rationality and representation which were formed and established in the modern philosophy from 17th century.

This course offers a philosophical introduction to the current problems of sexuality and gender through examining the debates in queer theory on subjectivity from the end of the 1980's till current time. The course material includes key texts from authors who use different methods of rethinking or deconstructing the subject from different positions: neo-marxism, psychoanalysis and post-structuralism such as Bersani, Butler, Halberstam, de Lauretis, Oksala, Pulkkinen, Rose, Wittig. These authors analyse contemporary theories of subjectivity from the very critical point of view. The main question for them is how the Western concept of subject works in the 'matrix' of heterosexual relations and how it excludes from itself the difference. These problems can be easily linked to the philosophy of Jacques Derrida, Roland Barthes and many others. We will also focus on queer political and cultural production which examines the collective subject. The question we will pose is: how queer theory as a critique of Western subjectivity challenges concepts of politics, epistemology, ethics and representation.

Yhteiskuntafilosofian aineopintokurssia tukeva yhteiskuntafilosofian tutoriaali on tekstipohjainen keskustelukurssi, jossa perehdytään valikoituihin yhteiskuntafilosofisiin artikkeleihin. Tutoriaali on jaettu kuuteen teemaan. Kutakin teemaa käsitellään kahden, hieman eri perspektiiveistä teemaa lähestyvän tekstin pohjalta. Vapaaehtoinen lisälukemisto valottaa keskustelun taustoja ja avaa osaltaan käsiteltäviä artikkeleja.

Opiskelijat lukevat kunkin kerran artikkelin etukäteen ja kirjoittavat siitä maksimissaan yhden sivun mittaisen referaatin. Opiskelijat pitävät vuorollaan noin 20 minuutin alustuksen käsiteltävänä olevasta artikkelista, jonka jälkeen keskustellaan yhdessä. Kunkin kerran lopuksi avataan hieman seuraavan kerran tekstiä / teemaa ja annetaan vinkkejä lisälukemiseksi.

Periodit I+II, useita opettajia, vastuuopettaja Marjukka Laakso, ensimmäinen tapaaminen ke 17.9. klo 14-16 S20A ls 334D ja kurssi jatkuu verkossa 10.12. saakka, jolloin keskusteluaika loppuu ja kurssin sivut sulkeutuvat.

Kurssin sivut: http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/blogs/ypf/index.htm

Vastuuoppiaine: käytännöllinen filosofia

Kurssin opetusmateriaalista ja teknisestä toteutuksesta vastaavat käytännöllisen filosofian laitokselta yliopistonlehtori, dos. Olli Loukola, tutkijat Marjukka Laakso ja Simo Kyllönen sekä opiskelija-avustaja Markus Neuvonen. Kaikki osallistuvat myös verkkokeskusteluun.

Prerequisites

Kurssille voivat osallistua kaikki Helsingin yliopiston opiskelijat, joilla on yliopiston verkkotunnus.

Objectives

Content

Tätä pyritään havainnollistamaan niin, että ympäristöpoliittisen filosofian keskeisistä aiheista, opetusteemoista, keskustellaan verkossa erilaisten toimijoiden lähtökohdista. Kukin opiskelija saa roolin, jonka kautta hän siis reflektoi ko. toimijan argumentaatiota. Näin pyritään jäsentämään ongelmakenttää, eri toimijoita sekä pääsemään eroon liian henkilökohtaisesta arvottamisesta. Keskustelua ohjataan kuhunkin teemaan liittyvillä keskustelutehtävillä. Roolit on jaettu eri ryhmiin (esimerkiksi ydinvoima, ilmastonmuutos), joissa saman ympäristöllisen ”ongelmatilanteen” eri toimijat (roolit) keskustelevat kulloisenkin opetusaiheen tehtävistä. Aikataulu näiden teemojen suhteen on seuraava:

I Johdanto filosofiaan ja etiikkaan 17.9. – 8.10.

II Ympäristö oikeutena 8.10. – 29.10.

III Kestävä kehitys 29.10. – 12.11.

IV Ympäristöpoliittinen päätöksenteko 12.11. – 3.12.

Ainakin seuraavista aiheista pyritään muodostamaan keskusteluryhmät (eli blogit): geenimanipulaatio, metsiensuojelu, ydinvoima ja ilmastonmuutos.

Course work and forms of study

Näin ollen opiskelijalla on kaksi viikkoa aikaa täyttää oman roolinsa keskusteluosuus kussakin teemassa. Lisäksi kurssin loppuun mennessä (10.12.) pitää palauttaa oppimispäiväkirjat, noin 1-2 sivua kustakin opetusteemasta. Ylimääräisen, vapaaehtoisen esseen kirjoittaminen kurssin pohjalta tuottaa 2 opintopistettä lisää. Esseestä tulee sopia kurssin opettajien kanssa etukäteen.

Grading

Arvsotelu muodostuu keskusteluaktiivisuuden ja oppimispäiväkirjojen pohjalta, asteikolla 0-5.
