EU2. Working Seminar on EU

NOTE! At the moment this course is taught only in Finnish. Regardless of that, this course is still compulsory for all student who want accomplish intermediate studies at EU study unit. For any special requests, please contact the course teacher.

Prerequisites

In order to participate to the seminar, study module EU1 has to be accomplished. Added to this minimum of 15 ECTS has to be accomplished of EU studies elective courses before participating.

Mode of assessment

Two periods long multidisciplinary seminar, in which students prepare a working plan and scientific seminar paper (app. 20 pages) related to own special field of interest.

Target group/Course level

Seminar is meant to students who doing intermediate studies (60 ECTS) in the undergraduate programme in EU studies.

Objectives

The object is to make students familiar with the European Union’s institutions and their relationships, decision-making process and its background elements. Also the aim is to look at EU and its citizen’s relations through the elections and citizen participation point of view. Attention is paid also to European history, present-day conflict as well as different options of future trends.

EU1.

N.B. This study unit cannot be included in the EU studies if the student incluces the study unit P215 or H230 to the intermediate studies of the political science.

Objectives

Study module's idea is to consider Europe and European concepts both as a historical and as a contemporary phenomenon. One of the essential part of examining idea of Europe is to think what factors have created and create uniformity and difference in Europe.

Content

Study module views different definitions of Europe. Question is approached on the one hand from historical point of view and on the other hand from its relation to political, social and cultural phenomenons. Study module discuss also the content of European identity and how its related to national identities.

Mode of assessment

Book exam. Choose three books out of four.

Alternative mode of assessment is to participate European cultures and Regions research -courses. Courses and lecture series modes of assessment varies.

Study module guides student to piece together different ways of approaching Europe's geography and geopolitics, identities that are interlink together with places and also question about regional and cultural differences and similarities.
