Post-graduate Studies

Post-graduate Studies

Content

Postgraduate studies can be divided into two degrees: Licentiate of Social Sciences and Doctor of Social Sciences.

Department of Communication usually takes about 4-6 new doctoral students annually from 10-20 candidates. The most important document is the research plan (8-10 pages) including topic, problem formulation and research questions, theoretical background, methods, data and timetable.

Those students who do not speak Finnish would benefit if they have established contacts to some researchers relevant to their topic.

In the Finnish system only those applicants who have already obtained a Master´s degree or similar from a recognized university are considered post-graduate applicants, and their applications are handled by the Administrative Officer, Ms. Terhi Kulonpalo, and all enquiries etc. ought to be directed to her (terhi.kulonpalo@helsinki.fi).

Master’s Degree in Communication (Media and Global Communication) 2009 -2011

Code: 770070 Credits: 120
The language of studies

The official language of the Master of Social Sciences Degree in Media and Global Communication is English. However, it is possible to include courses taken in other languages (e.g. during international exchange or exchange at another university in Finland) in the degree. The amount of courses in other languages than English cannot exceed 25% of the number of total credits of the programme. That is equivalent to 30 ECTS credits in the MGC programme.

IMPORTANT! All courses that have an MGC code are held in English. Therefore, all course work including the final work is in English.

Objectives

Advanced Studies

The aim of the advanced studies is to focus in intellectual and scientific areas of communication. Another objective is to deepen and broaden the knowledge in communication theory and analysis. Advanced studies also set the grounds of applying research methods in communication studies. The purpose is to promote the process of writing the Master’s thesis. The work placement and communication in practice units develop the student's practical communication skills.

When the student has completed all of the individual units in this study module, s/he must get the module graded and registered as “advanced studies in communication” in the department.

The overall grading scale is from 0 to 5. The Master’s thesis (40 ECTS) is graded separately.

MGC 2 Master's Seminar + Personal Study Plan (HOPS)

MGC 2 Master's Seminar + Personal Study Plan (HOPS)

Code: 770072 Credits: 10+1
Replaces Study unit 13 Research Seminar + Personal Study Plan (HOPS) In Finnish: S13 Maisteriseminaari 10 op + HOPS 1 op (770046)

Objectives

The unit aims at giving the students training in theoretical thinking, academic writing and in presentation skills. The objective is to support the writing of the Master's thesis. Academic Writing course is integrated into the research seminar course where students learn the skills to write a scientific text in social sciences and how to give seminar presentations.

Content

Lectures and group work, individual guidance and student presentations, 40 hours during two academic terms, + 20 hours academic writing skills (5 credits)

Mode of assessment

Seminar presentation, commenting on another student’s paper and Personal study plan.

During the first part of the seminar, the students are required to present their preliminary plan for their Master’s thesis, and during the second phase of the seminar they shall present an elaborated plan of their theme of Master’s thesis. Active participation in the seminar (e.g. commenting other students’ papers) is required.

Personal Study Plan: The students make a personal study plan together with their teacher-tutor when they start studying in the master’s program. During the master’s seminar the tutor and the student will together revise the personal study plan of the student; they will evaluate and update the current situation and will make a timetable for the master’s thesis.

Academic Writing: Students attend a separate academic writing course where they learn how to write scientific texts. The texts they produce during the research seminar are checked through individual guidance. The students will also learn how to prepare a seminar presentation.

Language Check: The students are required to send a part of their Master’s thesis (approximately 10 pages) to language check. The language check may take a long time due to long queues, therefore the students are recommended to send their papers for language check latest at the end of their Master’s seminar. Please contact the international affairs co-ordinator of the faculty of social sciences, Marianne Järveläinen, e-mail: marianne.jarvelainen@helsinki.fi

The unit is graded as a pass or fail.

MGC 5 Practical Training/Work Placement

Code: 770075 Credits: 6
Replaces study unit 16 Practical Training In Finnish: S16 Työharjoittelu 6 op (770049)

Objectives

The aim of the unit is to familiarize the student with working in public administration, non-governmental organizations, or in the private sector. Requirement for completion of the unit is three months of uninterrupted full-time training in a workplace, which has been accepted by the advisor in charge of the study unit, as well as a written report of training. The students search and find their internship place on their own.

Information on vacant training placements will be available at the Faculty’s www-page: http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/blogs/rekry-ilmo/ . The department has annually a limited number of grants sponsored by the university. To apply for this grant the students must have completed a minimum of 180 credits with basic and intermediate studies in Communication (or BA completed elsewhere). In case there are more applicants than the number of grants, the students are selected by lottery.

It may be somewhat difficult for international students who do not understand Finnish to find a position. They need to be more active themselves in searching for an appropriate place for internship. The internship may also be done abroad. Students may also apply for an Erasmus grant for internship in other European countries. The Erasmus office of the university gives more information about these grants and the application process.

In the required written report, the students are expected to write about their work experiences from a critical point of view. General instructions of Practical Training in the Faculty of Social Sciences: http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/faculty/Studies/internship/index.htm
