Analysing Representations of Ethnic Minorities – A Research Training Course

The course is a research training course focusing on media texts representing racial and ethnic minorities. The course consists of lectures and practical research work. During the lectures current research findings from international and Finnish research projects on ethnicity and media are presented. Further on are introductive lectures given for presenting relevant research methods for analysing media representations. The main focus is on various modes of qualitative text analyses (i.e. discourse analyses, critical discourse analyses and frame analyses), but the usability of content analyses, focus group interviews and expert interviews will be explored in relation to the topic of the course.

During the course, students are individually, in pairs and in small groups analysing media texts and inserts in international newspapers, television and radio and on various Internet news sites and discussion forums. For obtaining the 6 Credits, students are in addition to this deepening their research skills by conducting small scale case studies on their own time.

All the case studies will focus on a common topic decided upon in the beginning of the course according to the interests of the course participants. The theme will however be related to media representations of racial, ethnic, cultural or religious minorities. One suggestion is to focus on media representations of Islam and/or Muslims.

The outcome of the research training course is a booklet consisting of the student essays reporting on the case studies. The booklet will be printed within the series for Occasional Working Papers at the research institute CEREN (Centre for Research on Nationalism and Xenophobia at the Swedish School of Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki) and it will also be made accessible on-line.

The aim of the study unit is to familiarize the student with work in public administration, organizations, or private sector.

Requirement for completion of the unit is three months of uninterrupted full-time training in a workplace, which has been accepted by the advisor in charge of the study unit 16, as well as a written report of training.

The students find their internship on their own. Information on vacant training placements will be available at the Faculty´s www-page: http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/blogs/rekry-ilmo/ . The department has annually a limited number of grants sponsored by the university. To apply students must have completed minimum of 180 ECTS with basic and intermediate studies in Communication and basic studies in at least one minor subject (or BA completed elsewhere). In case there are more applicants than grants, the students are selected by lottery. Application form: http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/comm/fi/opiskelu/opinto-opas/hakulomake2007_english.pdf

It may be somewhat difficult for foreign students who do not understand Finnish to find a position. They need to be more active themselves in searching for an appropriate place for internship. The internship may also be done abroad.

In the required written report, the students are expected to write about their work experiences from a critical point of view.

The Argonaut Study Program is a continuing, international program in English since 1996, where students can specialize in information society and in social and cultural shaping of modern communications technologies.

The program is multidisciplinary, with a focus in social sciences. It aims to

  • provide research based knowledge of the complex relations of agency, communication and technology;
  • practical skills both in using virtual evironment and producing material for the Internet;
  • as well as skills for evaluating and researching technologies in the context of cultures and societies.

There are three types of students in the program: degree students -- both undergraduate and postgraduate -- from different faculties at the University of Helsinki, exchange students from partner universities in Europe, visiting students from other continents, and from our Finnish partner universities.

Students can complete Argonaut for their minor subject studies as a block of courses (25 study points). It is also possible to participate in individual courses within the program. In that case, the individual courses can be registered as part of the Intermediate Studies; Study Unit 9, Special Fields in Communication Studies, upon agreement with the responsible lecturer of the unit.

Post-graduate Studies

Code

Postgraduate studies can be divided into two degrees: Licentiate of Social Sciences and Doctor of Social Sciences.

Department of Communication usually takes about 4-6 new doctoral students annually from 10-20 candidates. The most important document is the research plan (8-10 pages) including topic, problem formulation and research questions, theoretical background, methods, data and timetable.

Those students who do not speak Finnish would benefit if they have established contacts to some researchers relevant to their topic.

In the Finnish system only those applicants who have already obtained a Master´s degree or similar from a recognized university are considered post-graduate applicants, and their applications are handled by the Administrative Officer, Ms. Terhi Kulonpalo, and all enquiries etc. ought to be directed to her ( terhi.kulonpalo@helsinki.fi ).
