The basic studies of communication introduce the students to mass communication and organizational communication as social, cultural and historical phenomena. The module consists of three parts. The first and second parts aim at giving the students a general knowledge of the main concepts and theories of communication. The aim of the third part is to give a general picture of institutions of communication, media policies and media law. The module gives the basic tools to understand and analyze the social control of communication.

The studies are mainly the same for both major and minor degree students.

When the student has completed all of the individual units in this study module, s/he must get the module graded and registered as “basic studies in communication” in the department.

The aim of the intermediate studies in communication is to give the students theoretical and practical basic skills of conducting research and academic writing. This module also introduces the students to different areas of communication and to professions within the field of communication.

Major degree students are required to complete 55 credits (including the seminar, personal study plan and the bachelor’s thesis). The minor students taking this module are required to complete 35 credits.

When the student has completed all of the individual units in this study module, s/he must get the module graded and registered as “intermediate studies in communication” in the department.

Study unit Research Skills

Unit Description:

The aim of this unit is to introduce the students to conducting research and academic writing. The students learn and develop skills of critical thinking, problem setting, defining concepts and combining theoretical and empirical thinking. In addition to research skills, the unit also aims at introducing different styles of academic texts and presentations, academic writing and publishing as a part of the research process.

This course is recommended to be taken as the first course in intermediate studies. It is possible to take it at the same time as the study unit 5 “Research Methods I”. It should be completed before attending study units 6 “Media Analysis” and 10 “Seminar”. It is recommended that the module of basic studies in communication is completed before taking this course.

Mode of Assessment:

Faculty exam or take home essay, please get in touch with the teacher of the course if you decide to do the take home essay.

Study unit Seminar and Personal Study Plan

Unit description:

At this stage the student will be able to produce a conceptual-theoretical seminar work on a topic s/he chooses and will be able to apply empirical research questions. The unit aims to teach how to collect and use research material, to produce scientific text, and to present and debate chosen topics orally. The personal study plan of the student is reviewed at this stage of the studies.

Mode of assessment:

Students are required to attend the seminar for two periods (40 hrs. + 6 hours social scientific expression) and read the following books. In the seminar the student writes an essay about a topic agreed with the lecturer and presents it to the seminar group. In the first study period, the students decide upon a theme and write a research plan. In the second study period, the students present their papers and act as opponents during other students presentations. The foreign students who do not understand Finnish should contact the lecturer and agree upon how to complete the seminar work.

Prerequisites:

Before taking the seminar course, Study unit 4 “Research Skills” should be completed. It is also recommended that Study units 5 and 6 (Research Methods 1 and Media Analysis) are completed. In general studies, Computer Science courses and Introduction to Statistics should be completed before the seminar course.

Study unit Bachelor's Thesis

The aim of the thesis is to develop the student's skills in doing research, using sources and presenting a scientific work. The student presents a paper in which s/he shows her/his ability to apply a scientific way of thinking and ability to understand and deal with questions of communication sciences. The length of the thesis is 15 to 20 pages.

Mode of assessment:

The thesis is written during the Seminar (study unit 10). Two seminar groups start in autumn and usually another seminar group starts in spring. Students must register for the seminar sessions beforehand (please consult the foreign student advisor or see the study guide in Finnish for exact dates and times of application and application procedure). The thesis should be submitted by the end of the following period after the seminar sessions are over.

Students must write at least one practice essay before submitting their thesis. Usually, these essays are the papers presented at the seminar, which have been corrected under the guidance of the examiner leading the seminar. The essays are checked for language and for contents. Please consult the International Relations Officer of the faculty for the details concerning the language check of the practice essays. Examiners from the department are responsible for checking the contents of the work. The process of writing the thesis will be evaluated as a demonstration of maturity. Bachelor’s thesis is submitted to the department's office.

The aim of the advanced studies is to get specialized in intellectual and scientific areas of communication. Another objective is to deepen and broaden the knowledge in communication theory and analysis. Advanced studies also set the grounds of applying research methods in communication studies. The purpose is to promote the process of writing the Master’s thesis. The work placement and tutoring units develop the student's practical communication skills.

When the student has completed all of the individual units in this study module, s/he must get the module graded and registered as “advanced studies in communication” in the department.

The overall grading scale is from 0 to 5. The Master’s thesis (40 credits) is graded separately.

The aim of the unit is to give the students an understanding of the current approaches to communication research by inviting researchers to present their latest research. Researchers present their starting points, perspectives, findings and methodical questions. The students are expected to learn what research is being conducted in the department and to have some ideas, already at this stage, about the theme of their master’s thesis.

Unit description:

The unit aims at giving the students training in theoretical thinking, academic writing and in presentation skills. The objective is to support the writing of the Master's thesis.

Mode of assessment:

During the first part of the seminar, the students are required to present their preliminary plan for the Master’s Thesis, and during the second phase of the seminar they shall present an elaborated plan of their theme for Master’s Thesis. Active participation in the seminar (e.g. commenting other students’ papers) is required.

Seminar Presentation, Commenting on another student’s paper and Personal Study Plan

Prerequisite:

The students are required to have completed their B.A. before they can participate in the master’s seminar.

Personal Study Plan (1 credit):

During the master’s seminar the tutor and the student will together revise the personal study plan of the student, they will update it, evaluate the current situation and will make a timetable for the master’s thesis. The students are also required to pass a maturity test which will point out their familiarity with the theme of their master’s thesis. The language skills of the students are also to be checked at this stage.

This course is to be completed at the same time as the Research Seminar. Optional ways of completing the course are:

  • special courses that are advanced level
  • reading fora with a group of students
  • other ways of completing the course can be discussed and agreed with the lecturer

Unit description:

The aim of the unit is to train the students in gaining skills of using research methods. The students choose one method to work with to deepen their understanding of that method. The main objective of the course is to give support for the Master’s Thesis. The students will work on the possible method that they will use for their Master’s research. The students are expected to understand why they choose a specific method and the critical points in the research process. The method they will choose can be either quantitative or qualitative.

Unit description:

The aim of the unit is to familiarize the student with work in public administration, organizations, or private sector.

Mode of assessment:

Three months of practical training in a job, which has been agreed in advance and accepted by the advisor in charge of the study unit 16. Information about vacant training jobs is available at the Department in the beginning of the spring term. The students can look for an internship on their own, as well. In this case, please consult the department, and the lecturer who is in charge of the unit. It may be somewhat difficult for foreign students who do not understand Finnish to find a position. They need to be more active themselves in searching for an appropriate place for internship.

In the required Work Placement Report, the students are expected to write about their work experiences from a critical point of view.

The unit is graded as pass or fail.

Unit description:

In this unit the students get familiarized with different kinds of research, education and different projects such as organizing conferences in the field of communication. There are many kinds of alternative tutoring places: teaching in small groups, acting as a research assistant in courses or research projects. The unit can be compensated by a special course from study unit 9 or study unit 14. Information about tutoring and special courses is available at the Department in the end of the previous semester.

The aim of the unit is to deepen the students’ theoretical knowledge in their chosen special field.

Unit description:

The aim of the unit is to familiarize the student into independent and critical research work, methods of communication, argumentation, the use of the source material and scientific writing.

Mode of assessment:

Writing of the Master's thesis is mainly independent work supported by advanced seminars and study groups. During the writing process students should also consult their own supervisor on a regular basis. Master’s thesis should be submitted in two copies to the Administrative Officer of the faculty together with a Faculty examination envelope and two copies of the abstract

Grading: The thesis is graded as fail, appro­batur, lubenter appro­ba­tur, non sine laude approbatur, cum laude approbatur, magna cum laude appro­ba­tur, eximia cum laude approbatur, laudatur.

The basic studies of communication introduce the students to mass communication and organizational communication as social, cultural and historical phenomena. The module consists of three parts. The first and second parts aim at giving the students a general knowledge of the main concepts and theories of communication. The aim of the third part is to give a general picture of institutions of communication, media policies and media law. The module gives the basic tools to understand and analyze the social control of communication.

The studies are mainly the same for both major and minor degree students.

When the student has completed all of the individual units in this study module, s/he must get the module graded and registered as “basic studies in communication” in the department.

The aim of the intermediate studies in communication is to give the students theoretical and practical basic skills of conducting research and academic writing. This module also introduces the students to different areas of communication and to professions within the field of communication.

Major degree students are required to complete 55 credits (including the seminar, personal study plan and the bachelor’s thesis). The minor students taking this module are required to complete 35 credits.

When the student has completed all of the individual units in this study module, s/he must get the module graded and registered as “intermediate studies in communication” in the department.

All work analysis courses are practical courses that are organized only in Finnish. Foreign students can replace work analysis by taking two extra special courses, or they may, for example, take a practical course or special courses from the Argonaut Study Program. Foreign students are required to get in touch with the teacher responsible of the unit to discuss about different possibilities. Work Analysis can be done on TV, Radio, Press, organizational communication, public communication or on another theme.
