Content

The course looks at some classic questions posed in political anthropology, and the context of that research, with the intention of exploring ways of thinking about world events today. For example, are we in a situation of constant low-level warfare, as Bruce Kapferer claims? How does anthropology offer insights into what is happening?

Course work and forms of study

The course meets twice a week for a seven week term. An essay is required although you have until the end of the term (16.12.) to complete the essay.

Registration time in webOodi 15.12.2007 - 31.01.2008

Prerequisites

Course participants should have completed at least basic level studies in anthropology.

Content

This course looks at cultural and social implications of various forms of modern technology. Although anthropologists interested in technology have mainly studied the impact of “Western” technology on “non-Western” societies, our focus will mostly be on the so-called Euro-American societies. We will be discussing the role of technology (for example, surveillance technologies, new reproductive technologies, information technology, etc.) in transforming increasingly diverse aspects of everyday life, including kinship, religion, politics and identity.

Course work and forms of study

The course consists of seven lectures (on Wednesdays) and five seminars (on Thursdays). Course requirements include weekly "reflection papers," a longer research paper, as well as a seminar presentation.

The working languages during the course are both English (lectures) and Finnish (seminars).

Content

Sociocultural anthropology is characterized by theoretical innovation inspired by the rigorous analysis of diverse forms empirical data. How do anthropologists perform this magic? This course guides students through methods of processing the raw material of fieldwork observation into refined forms of narrative and analysis.

Our principal text will be Ira Bashkow's "The Meaning of Whitemen: Race and Modernity in the Orokaiva Cultural World" (University of Chicago Press, 2006). All students in the course are expected to own this book.

Weekly seminars will be conducted as a close reading of the monograph, supplemented by short readings in relevant theoretical arguments, including those pertaining to fieldwork in (post)colonial settings, the interpretation of cultural imagery, cross-cultural 'flows,' ideas about cultural others, the transnational concepts and politics of 'race,' and so forth.

Dr. Strong will also supplement readings with relevant data culled from his own fieldwork in highland Papua New Guinea. Our main goal will be to understand and analyze the connections and disconnections between 'data' and 'description' or 'theory' and 'method' in the context of polished ethnographic narrative.

Content

The aim of this course is to discuss the dynamics of religion in the context of more general socio-cultural changes in modern societies. Focusing on the so-called New Religious Movements mainly in Western societies, we will explore various topics of broader theoretical interest for anthropologists such as secularization, religious fundamentalism, the relationship of religion and power, religious conversion, as well as different aspects of authority, gender and violence. The course consists of a set of lectures, documentaries and discussion seminars and is intended for anthropology students at the MA level, although students who are close to completing their BA studies are also welcome. To complete the course, students are expected to write two essays and make a seminar presentation.

We will read about, and discuss, the establishment of the American empire at the end of the 19th century, along with its ideological foundations. We will focus specifically on the acquisition of territories that are not contiguous with the territorial state in North America, but students may also explore the expansion west and its consequence for Native American groups. From this historical background, we will discuss contemporary events, the position of the American state, and whether or not this constitutes empire or another form of political organization.

Course work and forms of study

The course is limited to 15 students in order to allow for discussion of the readings. Each student will write an essay-style paper of 7 – 10 pages based on the readings, in English or Finnish.

Content

It is a commonplace today that the whole world is undergoing rapid social change. Anthropologists may underscore such common sense when they critique the far-reaching effects of neoliberal reforms or developments in the life sciences. Alternately, anthropologists may uncover continuities of the 'old' (as for example, the continuing relevance of the sacred) in the context of ostensibly 'new' social forms.

This course examines and critiques both the commonsense apprehension of global change and anthropological attention to it. What is social change? What is cultural change? How best can anthropologists address this topic?

We review major themes and approaches. These include: modernization theories, the 'great transformation,' structure and history, acculturation, neoliberalism, revolution, religious conversion, and more. Our principal text will be Webb Keane's "Christian Moderns: Freedom
