Content

This course visits the diverse and dynamic cultures of Melanesia, exploring seemingly-exotic systems of exchange, patterns of ritual, cosmological constructs, notions of gender, styles of sexual practice, and more. We review both long-term Melanesian historical trajectories (e.g., migration and settlement, agricultural intensification, etc.) and those more recent ( e.g., the social effects of Christian conversion and [post-] colonial governance). The course pairs the innovative and inventive forms of sociality exhibited across Melanesia with the innovations the ethnography of Melanesia has yielded for both anthropology and social theory as a whole, focusing especially on theories of economy and value, personhood and gender, and culture and history.

Content

What do anthropologists actually do and what is unique about anthropological research? Though ethnographic methods are shaped by each research situation and its particular historical and cultural circumstances, they are also guided by broad theoretical questions. Ethnographic research is comprised of three inter-related domains: creative theoretical speculation, methodological 'operationalization' of theoretical questions, and concrete research practices. The trick (or 'magic') of ethnographic research is creatively and pursuasively to relate empirical and observational data in many forms to the theories that motivate their collection. We explore the politics and ethics of research, kinds of observation, effective interviewing strategies, note-taking, ways of 'coding' or indexing information, data analysis, and approaches to writing.

Content

This course explores fundamental questions about human beings and cultural difference through focused exploration of a single topic: kinship. The family and marriage are today sites of considerable political and ethical debate globally. From test-tube babies to same-sex weddings to transnational adoption, new familial and marital relations demand a rethinking of this most 'anthropological' of subjects. The reinvigorated study of kinship cross-cuts multiple domains of social life: religion (in contestations over reproductive choice), the state (in debates over the legitimacy of same-sex unions), the economy (in changing gender norms), and more. Yet, the study of kinship has always provided a context for finding connections between diverse social phenomena. Anthropology's long-standing attention to kinship cross-culturally affords a unique perspective on current controversies and debates. This course thus grounds students in classic theory in order better to assess what is new and what is old in contemporary accounts of kinship. Our focus is on both canonical anthropological approaches to the study of kinship - approaches that have been central to anthropology's disciplinary identity - and on how they can help us to analyze new forms of familial relationship. The emergence of "gay kinship" provides an extended case study for considering these transformations.

Content

Anthropologists are racing to keep pace with the rapidly shifting social terrain of global modernity. This course reviews and critiques the resulting topical foci of contemporary anthropological theory. Whilst sampling important accounts of globalization, including those that emphasize both its 'cultural' and 'economic' dimensions, we ask: What unique knowledge can anthropology today reveal about the world? What general questions about human being does anthropology today seek to answer? We group our inquiries into four thematic areas: value and the problem of the commodity, semiotics and meaning in public culture, indigeneity and quandaries of political recognition, and science and the re-invention of the human.
