Current activitiesI am in charge of a crossdisliplinary research programme "Many Routes to Adulthood - Changing Cultural Age Orders in Finland". The research programme received funding from the University of Helsinki research funds in December 2004. The other two researchers who work in the project are Saara Tuomaala from the department of History and Minna Kelhä from the department of Education. More information about the research programme here.My own current research project is called "Young People Transgressing Cultural Age Orders" and my funding comes from the Finnish Youth Research Network. My data consists of media discourses of age as well as young people's life-stories. My research project is associated with a larger research program "15- to 19-year-olds in the Finnish Society", funded by the Finnish Youth Research Network. From the beginning of 2005, I am coordinator for a project funded by the Finnish Youth Research Network to create a Master's Program in Youth Research in Finland. An international book project on Western girlhood came out in December 2004: "Young Femininity: Girlhood, Power and Social Change". (Palgrave). In this project I co- operated with Lecturer Anita Harris, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia and Ass.Prof. Marnina Gonick, Penn State University, University Park, USA. In 2003 I co-edited an extensive anthology on the history of Finnish youth, "Nuoruuden vuosisata", together with Mervi Kaarninen. The book appeared in May 2003. Unfortunately it is only available in Finnish. My research specializations include sociology of age and the life-course, sociology of childhood, youth and education, cultural studies and gender studies. I am oriented to qualitative research methods, particularly discourse analysis, interviews and memory-work. I am a member of the Board of the Research Network "Youth & Generation" of the European Sociological Association. The next meeting will be held in Torun, Poland, in September 2005. The abstract deadline has already passedI am also active at the Finnish Youth Research Society. Teaching
and supervision I supervise doctoral and
Master's students on various topics. At the Christina- institute for
Women's studies I receive the exams for the study unit "Gender and
Life-Course" (Na261). Previous
activities: I was Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki for a period of time, 1.12.2003 - 30.9.2004. In this role I was part of the faculty's support team for developing teaching at the faculty. Recent Publications: Aapola, Sinikka - Gonick,
