I received my first Ph.D. in 1968 (University of Helsinki) and the second one in 1969 (Stanford University). In 1971 was appointed (full) professor of philosophy (esp. methodology and philosophy of the social sciences) at (what then was) the Department of Philosophy, University of Helsinki. I retired from this position in 2008. Having earlier worked and published in many fields of philosophy, especially philosophy of science and philosophy of action (see my Curriculum Vitae), in recent decades the theory of social action and sociality (collective intentionality, social ontology) has been my main research field. I have published many papers and books in international journals and with several international publishers. My most recent research books are the 2002 book with Cambridge University Press and the 2007 book with Oxford University Press. The newest book, Social Ontology: Collective Intentionality and Group Agents, published by Oxford University Press, is scheduled to appear in 2013. During the five-year period 1995-2000 I was Academy Professor at the Academy of Finland. 2005 I was appointed permanent visiting professor (lehrbeauftragter Professor) at the LMU University of Munich and have been teaching and doing research there for about 2-3 months every year since. I have received several grants and awards, including the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Award (Forschungspreis), awarded in recognition of achievements in research. The Academy of Finland has awarded me several research grants for hiring researchers working in my field covering most centrally collective intentionality phenomena and topics in social ontology. In 1999 I started a series of biennial international Collective Intentionality Conferences held mostly in Europe. Recently I founded a book series “Studies in the Philosophy of Sociality” published by Springer.
