Research
Research interests: Childhood research,
childhood and place, institutional childhood, methodological
questions, ethnography, earlier also women's work.
In my licentiate thesis from 1983 I used life course
interviews for a study on women's work and family life. The study has
been published in Finnish in Haavio-Mannila, E. & Jallinoja, R.
& Strandell, H. (1984) Perhe, työ ja tunteet. My doctoral
thesis Sociala mötesplatser för barn from 1994 (in
Swedish) is an ethnographic study on children's social interaction
in day care centres and on its meanings for the children. In 1986-89 I
also participated in a comparative Nordic research project on small
children's everyday life and social relations.
At present I am interested in transitions and displacements in
Finnish childhood and their consequences for the relations between
childhood and adulthood. I am especially interested in childhood from
a spatial perspective, and in relations between place, agency and
identity. I have investigated school children's participation in
working life, the public debate on school children's afternoons and
challenges from post-industrial society to location and boundaries of
childhood. Around these questions I participate
in a working group 'Children’s access to space and use of time’ in the
European research network COST A 19 Children’s
welfare and the research projects Regimes of childhood and children's welfare and Childhood, welfare and (new) forms of governance (Academy of Finland).
