TEACHING EXPERIENCETeaching load and methodsCurrently five to six courses per year, including lectures, small groups, examinations and seminars as well as some individual supervision. I have developed my own techniques for teaching and supervising in groups, and also new techniques of organising "open examinations" with minimal introductory lecturing, group work, carry-on notes and thematic questions in the examination situation. I have developed a new technique for the pro gradu seminar called "Jatkuvatoiminen gradusauna" (continuously working gradu bath). My current teaching constitutes a thematic whole called the Integrated Research and Teaching Programme on Life Style Regulation (integroitu tutkimus ja opetusohjelma elämäntapojen sääntelystä - INTO ETSIÄ). It includes:
Text-books and manualsBesides the introductions to sociology (5A:4-6, 11, 13 and 13a in my list of publications) I have published a manual for computer-assisted analysis of qualitative data (numbers 5A: 9 and 10). Although the software is no longer available, I use the manual in my qualitative methodology teaching. I also have written a students' and teachers' manual for the continuous pro gradu seminar (unpublished 2002). Teaching resultsIntegrating research into teaching has resulted in an efficient flow of students from lecture and reading courses to research practicum and to their own dissertation work, indicated by the number of students who have chosen to use data from my research (six theses). Several other students are working on closely related topics. A real research context has assured a publishable Quality of research practicum reports.Out of 18 studens who have finished my pro gradu seminar between spring 2000 and spring 2002 14 will have graduated by the end of 2002. Four additional students have dropped out from the seminar. All ten students who started in my doctoral seminar before 1997 have now completed their dissertations. No students have dropped out. Feed-back from students and colleaguesI have received from my students a "Diploma with laudatur for excellent work in the gradu seminar 2000-2001. The factors contributing to this special recognition have been devotion, expertise, sensitivity, inventiveness, enthusiasm, encouraging attitude and sense of humour". (Appendix 1) The sociology students' association Kontakti has proposed me as a candidate for the 2002 Eino Kaila award, granted annually by the University of Helsinki.
