Professor of World Politics at the University of Helsinki, Finland (since 2003).
My interests include philosophy and methodology of social sciences, peace research, futures studies, economic theory, global political economy and global political theory. Howard Richards has characterised After International Relations (Routledge 2002) as a “a rescue operation designed to rescue words like ‘truth,’ ‘reality,’ and ‘cause and effect”.
My recent books in English are The Great Eurozone Disaster. From Crisis to Global New Deal (Zed Books 2013) and The Political Economy of Global Security (Routledge, 2008). In January 2015, I published a new book in Finnish called Suomen talouspolitiikan tulevaisuus: teoriasta käytäntöön [The Future of Finnish Economic Policy: From Theory to Practice], following Tulevaisuuden politiikkaa, [Future Politics, 2013] and a new edition of Eurokriisin anatomia , the Finnish version of The Great Eurozone Disaster, all published by Into in Helsinki. I now work on two books in English, Unprincipled Economics (with Jamie Morgan, for Routledge) and Global Futures.
Previously, I have worked as a Professor of World Politics and Economy at the Nottingham Trent University, UK (1998-2003), and RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia (2007-2010, while on leave from Helsinki). During the first half of 2012, I was a Visiting Professor at the Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan.
