I currently work as Professor in Gender Studies in the Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies in the University of Helsinki where I also have a permanent position as Senior Lecturer in Gender Studies. I joined the Department in February 2012. I obtained my PhD from the University of Bristol in 2004 and became a docent in politics in the University of Helsinki in 2007. I have previously worked as an ESRC Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the University of Bristol (2004-2005), a Senior Lecturer (2006-2008), Professor (2008-2009), University Researcher (2009-2011) and Professor (2011) in the Department of Political and Economic Studies in the University of Helsinki, and as a Senior Lecturer in Gender Studies in the University of Jyväskylä. I was awarded the Good Teacher Award by the Faculty of Social Sciences in 2008 and the Academic of the Year Award by the Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers in 2009.

My second international monograph Gender and the European Union was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2010 as was my first international monograph Feminists Theorize the State (2006) and the co-edited volume Changing State Feminism (2007, with Joyce Outshoorn). I am also the Editor of Palgrave Macmillan's new book series Gender and Politics Book Series with Judith Squires. My research has appeared in a wide range of international refereed journals including International Feminist Journal of Politics; European Journal of Women's Studies; International Political Science Review; Legislative Studies; Policy & Politics; Gender, Work & Organization; Representation; and British Journal of Politics and International Relations; as well as a number of international edited volumes . My research on feminist state theories has also been re-published in the Women, Gender and Politics: A Reader (Oxford University Press, 2010).

My current research explores the Europeanization of Finnish gender equality politics in general and the fields of gender violence and multiple discrimination policies in particular. I recently co-edited a special issue on Institutionalizing Intersectionality for International Feminist Journal of Politics with Kevät Nousiainen. I am continuing to explore the theme in the Nordic context. My other projects include co-editing the Oxford Handbook on Gender and Politics (Oxford University Press, under contract, forthcoming in 2012) with Georgina Waylen, Karen Celis and Laurel Weldon.

I am a member of a number of international research networks including Research Network on Gender, Governance and the State (RNGS), Feminism and Institutionalism International Network (FIIN), Rethinking Women's Substantive Representation (RWSR), and Multidimensional Equality and Democratic Diversity (DEMDI) research network funded by Nordforsk (2009–2011). I was the co-convener of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) Standing Group on Gender and Politics (2007-2009) and in this capacity organized the hugely successful First European Conference on Politics and Gender (ECPG) in the Queen's University of Belfast in January 2009 and I am in the organizing committee of the Second ECPG held in Budapest in January 2011.

In addition to these international activities, I have published an edited volume in Finnish titled Toinen mailmanpolitiikka: 10 käsitettä feministiseen kansainvälisten suhteiden tutkimukseen (2007, with Johanna Valenius) and a monograph Mykät, kuurot ja kadotetut. Sukupuolten välinen tasa-arvo Helsingin yliopiston yleisen valtio-opin laitoksella (2005). I was the co-editor of the Finnish Women's Studies Journal Naistutkimus-Kvinnoforskning (2004-2005).  I am a board member of the Coalition of Finnish Women's Associations (NYTKIS) and a vice board member of Gender Equality Council (TANE) and was the vice-chair person and the founding member of the Association of Helsinki Women Researchers (2006-2009).
