I was born in Helsinki, Finland on the 4th of December 1957. My English father Walter and my Finnish mother Arja had met in Amsterdam a few years before. To the end of his days my father would claim that he only came to Finland for a visit. The visit lasted for well over forty years, and so my two sisters Lilian and Taru and I were brought up and educated in Finland.

It wasn't easy to find my own line. After having studied a bit of engineering, musicology and theatre studies, I ended up in Film and Television Studies which is a wonderfully wide ranging field of scholarship. I am particularly interested in the various ways our notions about the real world and audiovisual representation are intertwined as well as in the cross-influences between different arts.

My second most important interest is Opera. I have written the first extensive study of the history of opera to appear in the Finnish language and I am a correspondent of the London based Opera magazine.

On top of all that I really enjoy travelling, seeing all the awesome natural sights of our planet, learning about all the different different cultures and getting to know people from all corners of the world. The Earth is a wonderful place to live in - if only we have the wisdom to preserve it as such and share its wealth more equitably.
