Welcome

I update these pages from time to time, adding new information and fixing all the broken external links I find (an almost impossible task).

If you want to ask questions, suggest changes to the pages, or suggest additions or deletions from the list of suggested reading, please send an e-mail message to me (pedro.aphalo(at)helsinki.fi).

If you find any errors, things that you like or dislike, please do not hesitate to send an e-mail message to me. Thanks in advance for your help, and I hope you find these pages useful.

Browsers and plug-ins

I have attempted to make these pages "Lynx friendly", and I hope viewable with any browser.

[Any browser!]

I have updated these pages to use cascading style sheets, as this is the most portable and convenient way of using a consistent but customised style for display.

[CSS]

These pages look best when viewed with Firefox 1.0 or later or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later, or Opera, or Mozilla, or Netscape, or any other browsers which understand cascading style sheets and HTML 4.0.

With some loss of functionality (no graphics) they can be viewed with the character based browser Lynx.

Adobe's Acrobat PDF files can be viewed using the free viewer (can be used on its own or as a plug-in/ActiveX control).

A Technical Note

These pages conform to HTML 4.0. They have been, from time to time, HTML-syntax validated, according to their DOCTYPE tag using the validator at the W3 organization or more recently with Adobe GoLive.

Valid HTML 4.0!

They have been tested thoroughly only with Firefox 3 under Windows XP, and much less thoroughly with Internet Explorer 8.0, Opera 8, Safari 4 and earlier with Lynx 2.6 under Windows NT 4.0/XP, Mozilla under Linux, and Lynx 2.5 and Netscape Navigator 2.02 under Unix.

There are a several files in Acrobat's PDF format. In most cases I am generating them directly with PDFLaTeX (from the MikTeX package), but I also use Acrobat distiller and Acrobat Exchange for processing them.

Most plots of data have been produced with R or Origin and some post-processed with Adobe Illustrator, and other drawings directly created with Adobe Illustrator. Older GIF and JPEG figures were produced with an assortment of programs, but I am currently using mostly Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom. Many of the icons and decorations were downloaded from public archives on the Internet.

I have kept most pages simple, with just a few decorative graphs, and as far as possible short. At the moment inline graphs are in GIF and JPEG formats. Please e-mail any comments to the author. I am not the webmaster, as this pages are at the moment located in a server at the computer centre of the University of Helsinki.
